Advisor of the Semester

Sarah Watson, Fall 2007 Advisor of the Semester
Sarah Watson has been awarded the "DGS Advisor of the Semester " for the Fall of 2007

Every semester the DGS student body is polled to nominate advisors for the "DGS advisor of the semester award." Nomination packets are then prepared for the final deliberations which are also conducted by students. It is this level of student input that makes this award more meaningful to the advisor that receives it.

Sarah is indeed a worthy recipient. Since joining the advising team here, Sarah has consistently demonstrated her commitment to working with her students. One student's comments are illustrative of the positive role Sarah has on their growth and development at Illinois;

"Sarah has been an excellent advisor. I was really worried about coming to a big school thinking I wouldn't know who to contact if I had a problem with classes or just needed some advice . . . . she has been extremely helpful and has always been more than willing to help me nay way she can. I'm sure there are many good advisors here at the University of Illinois, but I know from my experience that Sarah is one of a kind. I'm so happy she is my advisor."

Congratulations to Sarah for the well deserved recognition.

Apply Yourself: A Major Declaration Conference

Did you know that a student who wants to declare a psychology major first has to complete a series of three courses here on campus and meet a specific GPA threshold? And did you know that a DGS student looking to move to the College of Communications needs to fill out an official application for entry into that college? Ours can be a complicated academic landscape. As students explore their potential majors, it's important that they know what these majors will expect them to accomplish before they can transfer in.

And this is why the Division of General Studies is pleased to announce Apply Yourself: A Major Declaration Conference . Slated for the afternoon of March 12, 2008, Apply Yourself gives DGS students the opportunity to meet with representatives from all the University 's colleges and majors that have specific transfer requirements. Students will receive detailed transfer checklists as well as insider's info on the sorts of out-of-class experiences, elective courses, and applications essays that will serve them well. Question-and-answer tables will be complemented by a series of half-hour sessions led by college and departmental advisors.

Basically, Apply Yourself is an information extravaganza designed specifically for the exploring student. Pre-registration is required. Interested students are encouraged to speak with a DGS advisor for all the details.
