Your Major exploration
The way we see it, your major exploration involves three important components:
1) Take classes in subject areas that interest you and play to your strengths!
• Did you know we have almost 190 major options and 90 minors at Ilinois? Browse all the majors and minors at the Programs of Study; then check out the classes offered on the Class Schedule.
• Take a class on major and career exploration - EPSY 220: Career Theory and Practice.
• Unsure of what classes to take? Definitely plan to meet with your DGS Academic Advisor.
2) Do some self-assessments and online exploration!
• Visit The Career Center website to learn more about Finding Your Major Path.
• Learn more about each major on our campus in our Discover A Major database
• Complete the Interest Explorer module on Exploring Pathways In Career Success (EPICS)
• Check out the Career Information Systems website; Log in with the Quick Start. Select the Programs of Study link on the sidebar
under the "Education and Training" heading.
• Attend one of the many informative Career Center Workshops, such as:
- Finding a Major that Fits
- Anatomy of a Successful Pre-Health Student
- Internship Essentials
- Winning Resumes and Cover Letters
• Learn more about Business Careers for LAS Majors.
• Learn more about what it means to be a Pre-Law student and how you can prepare for law school.
• Learn more about the requirements for the Pre-Health curricula offered on our campus.
• Interested in a health career but not having a good time with chemistry and biology? Did you know all the many ways you can be a
part of the health care field that may not involve such a heavy science curriculum? Check out some of those options here.
• Check out The Career Center website to learn helpful information on landing Internships, indentifying Important Skills for Success.
• Check out Career Voyages. Learn about Hot Careers, Emerging Industries, and visit the Student section to discover ways to explore your future career.
3) Get Involved outside of the classroom!
Okay, this point is key. There's so much to do on this campus and in your community... you have no good reason not to! The best part is, you start to understand what you like to do and what you are good at doing.
• There are tons of volunteer projects ... and one of them will likely fit your interests.
• We have over 1,000 Registered Student Organizations on our campus... you can even create your own!
• Winter break is a great time to consider job shadowing and informational interviews.
• Summer break is a great time to consider an internship or a relevant work experience.
• We have excellent leadership programs on campus, including i-programs and a leadership certificate.
• Study abroad is pretty sweet, if you think about it. Our program was recently ranked #5 in a national ranking for number of students sent abroad.
