Applying To DGS as a Transfer Student

Welcome! We're excited that you are considering applying to the Division of General Studies (DGS) at the University of Illinois. DGS is the campus department for students who wish to explore their academic options before declaring a major.  Because students can only remain “undeclared” at the University of Illinois until their junior year, DGS can only accept transfer students who have completed at less than 50 transferable hours (not including test based credit hours such as Advanced Placement exams or International Baccalaureate exams).

Our transfer student admission decisions are based on a thorough review of your application package, including the following criteria:

•    Have completed the equivalency of the University of Illinois' Composition I requirement.

•    Have earned at least a 2.70 GPA at your current college or university. We will also require a final      high school transcript for review.

•    Students who do not have 30 completed hours at the time of application are required to submit a      final high school transcript and ACT/SAT scores.

•    A minimum of the second level of Non-Primary Language completed (preferably the second level of      college level language). Completion of third or fourth level will be required to graduate, depending      on your declared degree program.

•    Academic and vocational interests as expressed through your application essays and personal      statements.
