Applying to DGS as a Freshman

Welcome! We're excited that you are considering starting your academic career at the University of Illinois in the Division of General Studies (DGS). DGS is the campus department for students who wish to explore their academic options before declaring a major. Students can stay “undeclared” within DGS for up to four semesters. During your freshman and sophomore years, DGS's team of professional, experienced, and award winning advisors will skillfully work with you to get the most out of your academic interests, explorations, and discoveries.

Our freshmen admission decisions are based on a thorough review of your application package, paying close attention to the following:

•    ACT composite score or SAT I (we do not use SAT II)

•    High school percentile ranking ( or, if your school doesn't rank, we'll calculate an estimated rank)

•    Co-curricular activities and your essays

We want to know what academic and vocational areas you are passionate about so we'll pay particular attention to your personal statements.
